17TH ANNUAL
TOP DOG CONTEST ESSAYS

First Place:  Maggie Cavanaugh & Gus
School:  St. Francis Xavier
Teacher:  Mrs. Baker

Hey Gus, do you want to be the Top Dog of Medina, Ohio? Really, you want to be Top Dog. OK, well let’s get started.

Hi my dog’s name is Gus. He is a boyer sheltie, shepard mix. He looks like Clifford the Big Red Dog except he is as black as night. He weighs 85 pounds. His nicknames are Gussy or Gussy Wussy. I think those are the cute names for a dog. Well, I would like to tell you the story of how Gus came to our family.

One night in the year 2000 two friendly dogs came to the back door of our house. After petting them for a while my dad said to go home. Almost 20 minutes later my parents heard howling and crying. My parents ran into the front yard and saw a dog laying in the road. He had gotten hit by a car. My parents approached the dog. He was still alive, but couldn‘t get up on his own. It turned out that he was one of the two dogs that had been at our back door earlier. My parents called a friend who was also their vet. She came over right away. Together the three of them lifted him up and layed him in the back of my parents Jeep. They took him to the vet clinic. My parents helped start an IV on the dog. The doctor gave him pain medication.

The next day ex-rays showed that he was severely injured. He had a shattered pelvis. Veterinarians at an emergency clinic were not sure if surgery would save his life. Meanwhile the dog’s owners had been found. They said that they could not afford to have the surgery done and would have to put the dog to sleep. My parents already loved him and did not want him to be put to sleep. They asked the dog’s owners if they could adopt him and have the surgery done. The people said yes and the dog once named Bear became Augustine, or Gus for short.

Gus came through the surgery like a champ. My parents brought him home and nursed him back to health. He quickly became a part of our family. My parents tell me that when I was born Gus would sit at the feet of whoever was holding me as if he was guarding or protecting me. I can remember when I was really little and Gus would let me try to ride him like a horse. When he got tired he would lay on his pillow and I would lay their with him.

Gus is now twelve years old and still going strong. He is loyal and loving and still loves to cuddle. This is why I think Gus is the Top Dog of Medina, Ohio. The End

Second Place:  Ali Scalera & Izzy
School:  Franklin Elementary
Teacher:  Mr. Farver

My dog’s name is Izzy. She is currently five months old and weighs eleven pounds. This lovable cavapoo has caramel brown and white fur.

I decided I wanted a dog a year before I got Izzy. NO one could get one for me because dogs are extremely exspensive. Then I decided I would save my own money. It took me a year but I finally saved four hundred and fifth dollars. We finally found a lady who said she had cavapoos for four hundred dollars. Unfortunately Izzy got sick two weeks later. Her tempature was one hundred and five and she had to go to the hospital. The vet said if we hadn’t gotten her she would have died! Dr. Tippins also said that Izzy probably came from a puppy mill. My grandma and I realized that’s why the lady had asked us to meet her at a campsite.

Even though she endured a lot Izzy is kind and gentle especially around my baby cousin Haley. Izzy barks at anyone who comes near our family just in case ther’re dangerous. If I get into a bed Izzy jumps up too and lays her head on my feet.

She might be young but she already knows how to sit, come, get down, get off, rollover, give, crawl, and dance.

Izzy’s also good with other dogs and kids. My Aunt has two dogs she likes to play with. They run around all day even though my Aunt’s dog, Chelsea, is ten times her size. Izzy loves us and only wants us to return the favor. Izzy loves me and can’t stand when I’m gone. When I’m with her she can’t seem to get enough of me.

Izzy’s not very old but she has some pretty funny stories. Once my friend and I were playing in my room and we heard a sound like someone knocking. It was Izzy! Another time my grandma was working on the computer, and she turned around to find Izzy on a shelf of china dolls!

Izzy’s been great since the day I got here. No matter how many victories or loses she has she is still the apple of my eye and a true Top Dog!

Third Place:  Katie Lawson & Holly
School:  Garfield Elementary
Teacher:  Mrs. Peters

I think my dog, Holly should be top dog because you can take her everywhere like the park and she will stay right by you.  Like when we went to the park. We where going up the staircase and she jumped up on the staircase and started to go to the slide. She waited for me to come and we went down the slide together. Which bring me to another reason why my dog should be top dog is because she always makes me smile.  Some more reasons why is because she can read your emotions. I started weeping because I thought of my grandpa. Holly slowly came over to me and licked my face and got all cheerful, and suddenly I felt better because Holly’s magic love had covered the sadness.

Fourth Place:  Erin Keller & Shamie
School:  Sharon Elementary
Teacher:  Mrs. Large

My grandmother’s 17 month old puppy, Shamie is Top Dog for a number of reasons. She is a female Shi Tzu and very sweet. She is brown, black, white, and amber. She has a lot of fur but doesn’t shed and a tail that is always wagging. S
he learned how to play dead, jump through a hoop, and run through a tunnel, all in the same week. She weighs 12 pounds and is 11 inches tall. As you can tell she is very intelligent. She is also very patient and never nips. When your’e upset she licks you, cries, barks, hits you, and anything else she can do to make you happy. She has a very special place in mine and my grandma’s heart because she helped us bare the loss of my grandpa and her Golden Retriever, Cindy. She also keeps my grandma company. That is why I think Shamie is the Top Dog.

Fifth Place:  Aidan Spitler & Bacardi
School:  H.G. Blake Elementary
Teacher:  Mr. Stanley

My dog Bacardi is Top Dog of Medina because he helps me get to sleep at night, he makes a great pillow and he makes me feel safe. Bacardi is a Golden Retriever, we rescued him for a rescue group called Golden Treasures. Bacardi only growls when there is danger around, which makes everyone feel safe. He is very calm and quiet. He is great with small and large kids. Sometimes he goes to be a therapy dog for people in nursing homes. The people really like him because he is so gentle with them. We were hoping he would fetch because he’s a Golden Retriever but turns out he doesn’t fetch even though it was in his type of dog name. Bacardi doesn’t chase our cats, which is very nice for us and for our cats!

Sixth Place:  Maygan Harmison & Elvis
School:  Hickory Ridge Elementary
Teacher: Ms. Poole

My dog is a service dog and my dog helps with my Dad. He is a service dog because my Dad goes to the meetings at the VA. My dog has special army vest. He runs fast. He sits when you give him treats. My dog can lay down. When you throw the ball and say “Drop it” he will drop it. My dog can sit. He can go anywhere with us.
