Two Great Contests for Medina County Students

The Top Dog Contest for Fourth Graders

If you look closely these little guys have their dog tags on!  Dog tags are required by Ohio state law and also often serve as your dog's ticket home should he get lost.  The Medina County Auditor's Office is responsible for the licensing of dogs in our county.  That licensing period starts on December 1, 2009 and ends on January 31, 2010.

Every Fall, as a kick-off to dog licensing time, Auditor Michael E. Kovack invites all Medina County 4th Grade level students to write an essay on why their dog, or a dog they know, is the Top Dog living in Medina County.  The top winners will receive the numbers 1, 2, 3, or 4 dog tag for 2010!  They will also receive a number of great prizes from companies in Medina County.

Auditor Kovack commented, "This is probably one of the most exciting events we sponsor each year.  The students, teachers and parents all enjoy the Awards Ceremony on December 1st of each year.  All the students, winning dogs, families and many others come together to hear the students read their winning essays.  The press is there and we film the event for local television.  It is a truly fun, and sometimes funny, event to host!"

Remember, the dog must be alive and living in Medina County to qualify, but does not have to be owned by the student writing the essay!

High School Seals Design Contest

The second contest is designed for high school students living in Medina County or attending Medina County schools.  The Weights and Measures Department of the Auditor's Office is responsible for checking the accuracy of all commercial measuring devices such as gas pumps, scales and scanners.
As the measuring devices are approved, a seal is placed on them to show they were tested.  I am sure all of you have seen them around the county.  Each year I ask high school level students to design those seals.  Each winning seal has the student's name on it and will be used for all of 2010.  There are very specific parameters that must be followed in the design process.

Auditor Kovack said, "Every year my staff and I are amazed at the creativity of the students of this county.  There are always a few seals that are completely different from any we have seen before!  We look forward to seeing them and voting on our favorites."

All entries must be in by November 13th.  There is an Award Ceremony held to which parents, teachers, principals and family are invited.  It too is covered by the press and is filmed for presentation on local television.  The top two students win $100 US Savings Bonds.
