Bookmarks, Referers & Spiders
Firewalls & Personal
Firewalls
(plus work-around for Norton & C.A.)

Why we don't allow certain bookmarks and referals.

Bookmarks In General -- A user often "bookmarks" ("save to favorites" or what ever the terminology) a web page for future reference. This can also apply to using a link from your "history." (It appears the same to us as a bookmark).

For our regular "HTM" pages, we have no problem with bookmarking.

Bookmarking search results is the same as bookmarking our search engine. And for highly specialized results (like a search for "yankatovich") that causes the person's ISP to send "spiders" or "robots" to make our engine run that same search daily, we will deny those requests.

Also, bookmarking our search engine (via bookmarking search results) has the same effect as "being improperly referred" to our site, which we will always disallow. See below.

No HTTP_Referer -- Firewalls

Networks, some ISP's, network firewalls and personal firewalls are sometimes set up for such a high level of protection that the 'http_referer' (or the page/link that refered your browser to the targeted page/request) is stripped off or blank.

For us it's like someone knocking at the door wearing a mask!

We must have the 'http_referer' information to allow one of our search engines to work (property lookup, transfers, and more). Click here to see if your browser/isp/firewall is stripping this off. (If you see nothing in the 'http_referer' section, you will need to make adjustments).

ZoneAlarm -- In the settings for Zone Alarm, for medinacountyauditor.org, allow private headers. Thanks to Jon.

Otherwise, for your firewall, check the software maker's documentation for "http_referer."

Bad HTTP_Referer -- Third Party Referal

Any webmaster could make a page (see below) at their site that asks for, let's say, a "property lookup" at our site. As a matter of fact, some do this sort of thing ... For example, one can make "code" to search "Yahoo!" for a street address. "Yahoo!," in turn, has a number of options to deal with that webmaster or referal: deny the request, charge for the request, or allow it to happen for free.

Any webmaster at another website (third party) could make a "property lookup" page on their site that runs the search engine on our site and displays the results on their site.

That would be using our programming, data, expertise & more to enhance their site! And that would also mean that a government web page is being used to enhance a private site.

Sorry, we will always disallow this!

A bookmarked search result that runs our search engine is indistinguishable from a bad referal as described above. So, bookmarked results -- whether or not a problem to the daily operation of our search engine -- get dumped also!
