The New Revised Homestead Exemption Program

Michael E. Kovack, Medina County Auditor, continues to
aggressively implement the Homestead Exemption Act (House Bill 119) which expands the Homestead Exemption tax reduction to all
homeowners 65 years of age and older. There is no longer any income qualification.
Under the new law (2007), $25,000 of a home's value will be sheltered from
taxes. The tax cut will vary across the county, but should amount to annual savings on
average of $300 to $400.
"I would encourage every property owner who falls into
the categories listed below to immediately contact my office to take advantage of this program.
The Homestead Exemption is open to any Ohio homeowner who currently lives in
their primary residence as of January 1st and who:
-
Is at least 65 years old or will reach age 65
during the current tax year; or
-
Is certified totally and permanently disabled as
of January 1st of the current tax year, regardless of age; or
-

and who was at least 59 years old on the date of their spouse's death.
