Important
Changes to the Homestead Exemption Program
State
Legislature Makes Major Changes Effective July 2, 2007
Michael E. Kovack, Medina County Auditor, today
announced his office will be aggressively attempting to implement
House Bill 119, which was recently signed into law by Governor
Strickland. This bill expands the Homestead Exemption tax
reduction to all homeowners 65 years of age and older. There
is no longer any income qualification.
"I would encourage every property owner
65 years of age and older to immediately contact my office to
take advantage of this program," Auditor Kovack said.
The deadline for registration is October 1st."
"The best way to get information
regarding the new program is via the internet," Kovack
said. Homeowners can download the application form. Or, if
they are paying their property tax bill, they can simply stop
in."
If you are downloading the form and mailing it
to the office, please mail it to:

Kovack said his office will also be signing
property owners up during their informal hearings for the
upcoming State Mandated Reappraisal. Kovack expects to
notify all homeowners of reappraisal results no later than early
September. Informal hearings will be held in communities
across the county prior to the October 1st deadline.
Applications will be taken at all locations.
Under the new law, $25,000 of a home's value
will be exempted from taxes. The tax cut will vary across the
county, but should amount to annual savings of approximately $410
in Brunswick, $450 in Medina and $345 in Wadsworth. Besides
the age requirement, a qualifying property owner must occupy the
home as their principal place of residence as of January 1, 2007
for a tax reduction for next year.
If property owners are not able to access the
internet or attend one of the informal meetings in their
communities, Auditor Kovack's Office will also register
homeowners Monday through Friday from 8am until 4:30 pm until
October 1st.
