The Importance
of Memorial Day
A Special
Contest for High School Sophomores, Juniors and
Seniors
DEADLINE
FOR ENTRIES IS MAY 21, 2008
Dear High School
Students,
Originally
called Decoration Day, Memorial Day is a day of
remembrance for those who have died in service to
our country. It was first officially
celebrated on May 30, 1868, when flowers were
placed on the graves of Union and Confederate
soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery.
In
times of peace, many people see Memorial Day as
simply an opportunity for a three-day
weekend. In times of war, it conjures up
considerably more feeling. For members of
the armed services, particularly those who have
seen combat, Memorial Day stirs tremendous
emotions that are often only shared with their
comrades in arms.
As
a United States Navy veteran, Memorial Day has
deep meaning for me. For this reason,
I am asking high school students throughout
Medina County to reflect on the day's meaning and
to share their thoughts with us in writing.

We will recognize three
overall winners and reward them with United
States Savings Bonds of $250, $150 and
$100. We will also recognize each of the
top three entries for sophomores, juniors and
seniors.
Thank
you for your time. Whether you enter the
competition or not, I hope you will take some
time to reflect upon the deep meaning Memorial
Day has for the countless families who have lost
loved ones over the years and for all Americans.
Sincerely,
Michael E. Kovack
