MEMORIAL
DAY ESSAY CONTEST
CONTEST
RULES
DEADLINE
FOR ENTRIES IS MAY 5, 2008
There
is no set theme for your essay. It could be, "What Memorial Day Means to
Me." It could be a story about a family member. You might want to talk to
one of our diminishing World War II veterans and relate their feelings and yours as you
talked about his or her experiences. You could reflect on the current conflicts in
Iraq and Afghanistan and whether they have touched your life at all.
You
might consider what it would be like for you to be sitting in harm's way in a year or two.
Although there is currently no draft for American youth, in the 1960's and early
1970's students at your high school faced the very real prospect of fighting in
Vietnam upon graduation.
To enter, you must be a sophomore, junior or senior
residing in Medina County or be a homeschooler (equivalent grade) in Medina County.
You may be a resident of the County and attend a school outside the County. Essays
should be no longer than 1,000 words. They must be
typed. You will be judged, first and foremost, on the essay itself---your thoughts,
the clarity of your writing and the impact it has on our judges. You will also be
judged on grammar and spelling.
All entries should be
sent to:
Medina County
