Storm or Fire Damage

Dear Medina County Residents,

As we all know, April showers bring May flowers.  Unfortunately, in our area those "showers" can become very serious and damaging storms.  I want to remind you that should you have damage to structures on your property due to destructive Spring storms you may claim a reduction in the taxable value of property that has been damaged or destroyed.  Let me underline that I am referring to structures---not trees, etc.

Ohio law enables property owners to claim the reduction at any time, regardless of the cause of the damage.   That means fires or other forms of damage are also claimable.  The amount of reduction is prorated based on the calendar quarter in which the damage occurred.   Property owners must file an application with my office for a reduction no later than December 31st in the year that the damage occurred.  Refunds or credits may be available.

In the past we have had some tremendous storms that did significant damage.  I believe the residents of Medina County deserve the relief that  this law provides.  It provides quick and effective property tax relief to those homeowners during their time of need.  Please remember that we are here to help you.  Whether a storm, a fire, or some other catastrophe occurs, you need to make sure to request a "Valuation Deduction for Destroyed or Damaged Real Property" from this office and we will help you as quickly as possible.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Kovack
