AT THE GASOLINE PUMPS...

When we check gas pumps, we always take a 5-gallon prover which checks the calibration at each pump. When the prover is full, the inspector will be able to check the reading to see if it is within tolerance. The maximum tolerance is 6 cubic inches (1 gallon is equal to 231 cubic inches). There is a total of 1,155 cubic inches in 5 gallons; hence the gas station is only allowed to deviate by .5%.

1.Be sure the attendant or you are using the correct pump. The octane rating and the price per gallon or liter should be clearly marked on each pump.
  2. Be sure the pump is set to zero before any gasoline is pumped.
  3. Check the price by multiplying the number of gallons or liters by the unit price. Be sure this shows as the total due.
  4. Figure the cash discount, if any. Check that you are charged the right amount.
  5. If using a credit card, check your receipt to be sure the amount billed is the amount on the pump. Take your card and any carbon paper from the credit slip.
  6. If you have a problem or question that is not resolved with the gas station, contact your Medina County Weights and Measures Office for advice.
